I started this project a month ago. It's still a work in progress, but I thought I'd share the results so far. My aim was to get a decent gaming board with low costs to play games of Hordes, 40k or whatever. It still came out pretty costly with all the tools I needed to get for it, but still cheaper than those hideous plastic gaming boards.
Next step was to add extra fortification in the form of two wooden planks that were leftovers from our kitchen cabinets. I guess you can pretty much skip this step, but I wanted the board to be really steady...
I made these hills from pieces of foam, then glued them on top of the board. I used some mastic or putty whatever it's called to get rid of the seams and to get more texture. It took darn ages to dry.
I then made a mixture of paint, terrarium sand and glue for the crap that I call the "texture goo". Texture goo was painted on top of the board to give it some color and texture. I started to hate that color very soon and painted more reddish brown on top of it.
Ok, this was the result of painting the new brown. Paint is still wet in the picture, sorry. It came alright though.
My paint gun.
This was the result after tons of flocking with Gale force 9 flocks and adding autumn bushes and painting the hills. I'm not 100% happy with it, but I will be adding more flock and hays once I get the stuff I ordered for this. I will post pictures of the finished board later.
As a side product, these nice little hills came out.
